The Golden Age Plein Air Painting on Monhegan: A Walking Guide
by Sally Babylon. 2012 Art Legacy Publications. ISBN 9780985305703
This guidebook gives you the experience of the island of Monhegan as it was painted by those who made up its first artists' colony—its plein air painters. A Monhegan still vivid on museum walls, but easily missed on the trails of the island today, if you don't know where to look! On this walking tour you will see much the same scenery and see the sites where the artists created masterpieces of this island's golden age of plein air painting—outstanding paintings by George Bellows, Edward Hopper, Rockwell Kent and others that are still as fresh and relevant today as when they were painted in first decades of the 20th century.
In this backpack-sized book are 20 illustrations of the paintings and 20 vintage photographs or postcards that show the sites where the artists set up their easels to paint in the open air (plein air). Guided by the tour map and directions you will find not only the views the artists painted from, but pass by their studios, homes, and hostels. Featured on each left-facing page is a painting done on site and on the right-facing page a vintage photograph or postcard of the site with anecdotes about the painters and their working methods. Notes in the back of the book provide more information and a bibliography adds still more resources for the visitor or home reader.
